The comedian, 68, who had to go to hospital after crash on Route 66, admitted that the accident was his fault.

He said: “I had come out of a souvenir shop and was weighed down. We went half a mile and came across a bit that was like stairs and the trike went over.

“I have a purple patch on my knee that you will only see when I wear my kilt. I will lie to people that it was shrapnel!”

A source on the show, on ITV next month, added: “Billy was in pain but took the p*** out of himself constantly.”

The 68-year-old reported the incident when his car skidded and smiling star on top of trying to implement.

Connolly with two broken ribs from there were able to escape but onlookers said it was a serious accident.

A source said to UK newspaper Daily Express: 'There is a button on the vehicle to boost its power, and Billy reckons his glove might have accidentally triggered it.

'The bike kicked forward and he came off and it ran over the top of him. It is a big beast. They weren't filming at that point, because they had already shot most of the footage of him on the bike anyway.

'It was a pretty horrific accident and he was in a lot of pain. They lost two days off the schedule while he recovered sufficiently to carry on.'
